The resource sector’s leading contribution to Aboriginal employment and engagement headlined the 2016 Premier’s Community Excellence Awards in Mining and Energy.
Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis presented the first winning award in the category for Excellence in Social Inclusion to Heathgate Resources Ltd for its exceptional partnership in an Aboriginal School Mentoring program with the Port Augusta Secondary School and the Career Employment Group.
This dynamic program equips year 8-12 students with skill sets for the future. Central to this initiative is a commitment to instil in young aboriginal school students the skills, aspiration and confidence to finish school.
The Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara Aboriginal Corporation (AMYAC) with partner OZ Minerals also won the category for Excellence in Social inclusion for establishing a sustainable, professional and competitive business.
From sponsoring local sporting and cultural events to the funding of volunteer programs, the larger companies such as OZ Minerals and Santos – winners of the 2012 Premier’s Awards for Community Excellence – and those with far fewer resources, are investing time and dollars in a myriad of both community and internal initiatives to address local needs and encourage employees to play a role in their communities.
Six mining and energy companies were recognised for their contributions to South Australian communities at the SACOME Annual Resources Industry Dinner on 6 May 2014.
Presented by the Treasurer and Minister for Mineral Resources and Energy, the Hon Tom Koutsantonis MP, the winners of the 2014 Premier's Community Excellence Awards in Mining and Energy were:
