The South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy (SACOME) welcomes the announcement today by The Hon Tom Koutsantonis MP, Minister for Mineral Resources and Energy, to undertake a comprehensive review of the Mining Act.
SACOME President, Terry Burgess said “Industry supports the State Government’s proactive, considered and risked based approach to the management of mineral resources development in SA.”
The last major amendment to the Mining Act was in 2011 where inefficient and outdated sections were updated to present standards and practices. Since 2011 SACOME members have identified further improvements to the Act to maintain its regulatory robustness while providing clarity to all stakeholders engaged with the Act.
SACOME Acting Chief Executive, Dr Nigel Long said “The timely announcement of the eight key principles to improve efficiencies, increase flexibility, modernise and digitise the Act are particularly positive directions.”
“We look forward to a constructive discussion with the State Government on the detail of this critical piece of legislation. SACOME is confident this review will continue the leading practice regulatory framework for exploration and mining and give industry the certainty and confidence to continue to invest in SA,” Said Dr Long.
